Title: TU 04 Business Aspects of Broadband Wireless Access Technologies

Duration: Half Day/9:00-12:00

Instructor: Dr Riaz Esmailzadeh, Keio University

Abstract: This tutorial gives a detailed description of the business side of broadband wireless and mobile communications technologies with respect of cost and benefits. The past several years have seen the emergence of numerous technologies all aimed at providing high data rate wireless transmission links. Many are aimed at providing services such as wireless ADSL. This tutorial reviews these technologies form a business point of view. It first reviews the major present wireless technologies, how they have come about, and where they are most utilized. It then gives a short background of wireless communications and the challenges involved in serving a large number of users in a wireless environment. This background is used to explain why the major present technologies, such as WCDMA, TD-CDMA, WLAN, WiMAX, etc have appeared. The issues of fixed and variable cost associated with each technology are discussed. The characteristics of each system in facilitating multi-user shared usage of resources are discussed and compared, leading to a discussion of capacities of each technology and the number of users that can be served by each network. We then addresses the different segments of the market, public mobile systems, hot spot coverage, personal area network, and so on and how/why several technologies are needed to address these different segments. The services served over the future networks are discussed and their expected growth over the next decade are presented.

Throughout the tutorial technologies are compared with reference to the cost of manufacturing, implementation, network design and operation, handsets, and data rates. The mobile telecom value chain is discussed to show how each component adds value to the whole.

Motivation: Seen from both technical and business aspects, this tutorial presents the issues of importance in broadband wireless/mobile communications; giving the telecom engineer and manager an understanding of the issues that make a difference in the success of mobile business.
